American, b. 1914
A graduate of the photography program at the California College of Fine Arts (1949), Jones studied with Ansel Adams and Minor White and later taught photography within the same program. In addition to teaching, Jones worked as a professional assistant to Ansel Adams.
Jones' photographs are collected internationally and are among many important surveys and catalogues on the topic of the history of California photography. A recent monograph published by Aperture, Pirkle Jones: California Photographs 1935 – 1982, surveys his career.
