An influential quarterly journal published from 1903-1917 by Alfred Stieglitz, composed of photogravures tipped into each copy by hand. The commissioned articles, by controversial critics on the art of photography and on art in general, acted as a forum for contemporary debate. Stieglitz also featured paintings and sculpture by Matisse, Picasso and Rodin as well as work by photographers such as White, Steichen and Cameron. The production of the journal was so incredibly expensive it eventually led to the demise of the publication. The last three issues of Camera Work were largely devoted to the work of Paul Strand, as pictorialism gave way to modernism.
