Photographer Craig Varjabedian is widely acclaimed for his images that embrace the people and places of the American West. While Craig's photographic career has spanned over thirty-five years and encompasses a deep grasp of the technical aspects of the photographic process, his gift is his intuitive ability to make authentic and compelling images full of light and life.
Varjabedian received his Master's degree in Photography from the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology and was formerly the director of the well-known New Mexico Photography Field School. Craig now offers hands-on photography workshops at the Eloquent Light Photography Workshops in Santa Fe. His books include En Divina Luz: The Penitente Moradas of New Mexico, which won the 1995 Association of American University Presses award for excellence, and By the Grace of Light: Images of Faith from Catholic New Mexico, which won the 1997 Ben Franklin Award. He is currently completing Ghost Ranch and the Faraway Nearby, to be published by the University of New Mexico Press in Fall 2009. Varjabedian's work has won an Emmy Award and he has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the McCune Charitable Foundation and the New Mexico Humanities Council. Museums that have exhibited and collected Varjabedian' photography include the Albuquerque Museum, NM; Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, CO; the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University, TX; the William Benton Museum of Art at the University of Connecticut, CT; the Museum of the Southwest, TX and the Philbrook Museum of Art, OK.
