American, 1882 - 1966

Coburn took his first photographs at age eight, and in the following decades became one of the foremost proponents of photography as a medium of artistic expression, through his membership with the Photo-Secession and the Linked Ring.

His portraits and highly designed studies of the land and city have become canonical images in the history of photography. And his experimental Vortographs opened up new possibilities for image making. Coburn's photographs are highly collected, and are among major public and private collections. Books on Coburn include: Alvin Langdon Coburn: Photographs 1900-1924, Alvin Langdon Coburn: Symbolist Photographer, and Alvin Langdon Coburn: Photographer.
