Chip Hooper | American, 1962 -

Chip Hooper has been refining his photographic technique and amplifying his visual perception for twenty years. Crafted with meticulous precision, his photographs act as keyholes through which viewers are allowed to share in his ever-evolving understanding of the world. As a child growing up near Lake Michigan, Hooper was mesmerized by the interplay of light, physical power, and spiritual grandeur of large bodies of water.

In 1988 he moved to Carmel, California, and since then his photographs have explored the spectacular meeting of the Pacific Ocean with the rugged beauty and sweeping panoramas of the California coastline. Living in the West has broadened his perception revealing other new environments he feels equally compelling, including the deserts of the Southwest for the abstract forms he finds so captivating, and for the spiritual presence residing in the ruins of the ancient Anasazi civilization. Hooper believes his photography is an aesthetic and a spiritual reflection of the world he seeks to create for himself and his family. The places he photographs connect him to his deeply held principles and to his concern for the preservation of the natural world. His images radiate a palette of light that both inspires and calms. Through his thoughtful and discriminating vision we are invited to contemplate a connection to our world and to the universe.
