Mario Giacomelli | Italian, 1925 - 2000

Mario Giacomelli was born August 1st, 1925 in Senigallia, Italy.  He was trained initially as a typographer, and this early interest in graphic effects became an integral part of his later photographic work.  Giacomelli's photographs both emphasize the abstact patterns of the rural landscape, as well as potray many aspects of Italian life. 

His work is the subject of numerous museum exhibitions and books, including most recently Mario Giacomelli: Figure/Ground at the Getty Center (2021).  Giacomelli's photographs are held within the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, among many others.
